This is as a person recovering from Bibliolarty one of the hardest things you will do, but it’s very important for your spiritual journey. Because what has really occurred is you have made the Bible into an Idol, you put in place of God who is a relational Spirit and not fixed letters on a page. So without getting into the question of how you were brainwashed into believing this, lets talk about recovery for a moment. You have to understand that people kill each other over religious Idols and the very Bible you took as an Idol is full of such stories, included the one about Jesus. You also have to understand that all recovery starts with taking personal responsibility.
So a few things to get out of the way
#1 the Bible is not a Book but rather a collection of writings spanning many thousands of years, stories and poetry of other peoples journeys with God and their understandings at the time.
#2 Every word in this collection of writings called the Bible is not words from God’s mind, indeed there are relatively few times is “God said” phrases in the Bible. Many of those times were in fact one time events according to writers and for a very local problems.
#3 You wanted it to be true (the bible is God’s conversation with me) because it’s far easier to go by the letter than the spirit, you were for lack of a better word spiritually lazy, or naturally fearful of the unknown which is a fair greater truth about God then all the books in the world about the subject.
#4 It was also nice to feel you had mastered something in your life, and mastering knowing God well it doesn’t get much more certain and puffed up than that. Haven’t you seen yourself in the language of others trapped in this cycle of fear of the unknown masquerading as certainty of the infinite?
Notice I put the responsibility were it lies because there is something in your personality, that both wants to be controlled and control others by the phrases “The Bible Says” or “The Word of God Says.” or in my day “It is Written.” The truth is it’s not hard to hear God for yourself once you make up your mind to this truth, stop worshiping God’s conversations with others as if they were idols from the past to turn into Christian demi-gods.
But in one place in one book it says it’s inspired and I get that but so is a sunset or a birds morning song you see let it be what it is a breeze through a tree, but the tree is not the breeze. You made it into an Idol, how many people would rather study “God’s word” then go for a walk together in the woods or meditate on goodness or love. Look we took the easy way out letting the “experts” tell us what it meant and believing it lock stock and barrel, that they and it were beyond question. we are responsible for this box we made, not them you see people with always chose control over the freedom of an unknown journey. So the first thing you must do and I mean really do is repent, yes I used the word repent. Repent that you took the road most traveled and that you suck at leaps of faith and journeys into unknown lands. It’s funny that men for the most rule this Kingdom of Bible worship and the idolization of the stories of others, but the time has come to make our own stories from our journeys. Yes let us be inspired by the journeys of others and learn from them if possible, but let us never again chose then for now or past glories for future ones, Carpe Diem my friends. to be continued.
