Fixed Horizons & New Perspectives

One of the things I find myself  doing more and more lately, is observing how I Perceive & Understand the world around me.  It goes with saying that my Perceptions affect my ability to truly learn and change. This is I am sure closely related to my desire to see beyond the Fixed Horizons I have built up over the years. Most of these fixed Horizons to my dismay are constructed more of fiction than fact, although for many years I have been loath to admit it.

This for me has been most acute in the area of Theology, which for many years I treated as an exact science rather than the art form it really is.  There is a reason why the Theology Department at a liberal arts college, is not found in the Science Building.  Because Theology uses some of the same tools of logic and language, I just Assumed it carried with it the same weight.

So let me tell you what changed, I simply stopped treating the study of an Infinite God as a Fixed Horizon.  More importantly I stopped being fearful of questions that challenged by heretofore untouchable understanding and perceptions.  If there is one thing I am most thankful for in this Post Modern Age of Derrida, Rob Bell, Peter Rollins, and a whole host of new thinkers.  Is the courage by which these women and men ask questions that challenge Orthodoxy which holds the idea and assumption that it alone has the right of succession.  Because after all only the Old Questions and the assumptive answers discovered in ages past, can rightly be called the Truth.  It reminds me of how Dear Leader is chosen in North Korea, did anyone doubt it wasn’t going to be a Jong boy child?

Of course these types of environments are dangerous to challenge but without any credible threat other than a seven letter word (heretic), the questions are out of the bag. With the result that our passionate pursuit of God might actually begin to look like something, more than just a fortified castle with moat and burning oil included.

Let me give you an example from the other day, I had always assumed back in my Calvinist day, that Adam died spiritually in the Garden with Eve.  Then one day I heard someone ask a question that would challenge all my Fixed Horizons.  What if He only died Physically and it was His perceptions that changed His ability to see God clearly?  Wow then man being born to die and go to hell was just a perception based on an assumption, pretending to be a Fixed Horizon.

What would my theology look like if God still thought it was all Good and the process is one of restoration, rather than a courtroom with God demanding payment for being offended?

What if God is Love?

What if I was partly or completely wrong?

So my New Perceptions and Assumptions  are no more fixed than theirs, and are based on the Fluid Horizon of What if.   I have discovered and infinite God there who Loves me, a God who must be forever discovered, Horizon over Horizon over Horizon!  I have discovered faith again and the actual need for grace in the face of my ignorance, with eyes wide open.

Change

It has been said “Change is Inevitable” but I have observed one thing that seems to have the capacity to resist change, and that is the Human Soul.  The biggest reason for this is simple, change makes a big mess of the relationships we hold so dear.  It also asks us to release Ideas, Assumptions and Opinions that we once thought where beyond question.

So most change must be forced upon us, while we are kicking and screaming all the way to transformation.  You know transformation, that process that once you start it you can’t get it to stop.  Most people are “Waiting for a Miracle,” you know that process that makes you change without any effort on your part.

Hey baby they are not going to change no matter how much you pray for a Miracle.  Because it’s too much work and they like the hole they dug for themselves.  Resistance I have come to find out is “Not Futile” after all,  Spirit really does resist the proud and give grace to the humble.

Want change then stop trying to change others and take the leap of faith, see where the Road Less Traveled takes you.  Or close your trap and accept whatever the fates dish out. Then you can tell the story about how your lot in life “must be God’s will” after all.

Let me let you in on a little secret, the change that matters is the distance from your head to your heart.  Little Things lead to Big Change, it’s not a Big Bang but rather an Slow Evolution over time and space.

So start by challenging an Assumption you have held for a long time, that on the face of it does not or is not working.  Then do the opposite, study the opposite and invest in it, with all your heart, soul and mind.

Truth be told you will not realize that you have changed, until one day in a moment of reflection you realize you are not the same person.  Then look around you and you will see those around you are not the same either, perspective does matter.

WHAT A MIRACLE!

Assumptions

Ever try to go a day and take a break from your Assumptions or as Francis Shafer called them Biased Presuppositions?  Did you ever wonder why life and the people around you don’t look so “New Every Morning”?  Are you Curious why you find it so hard to see things from a different point of view?  It occurs to me that Assumptions are getting in the way of creativity as well as the creative experience that life is meant to be.

First lets define terms here or what I call when I teach “A Webster’s Timeout” you need to know that Assumption is a Noun which make’s  it one of those heavy words not lightly dismissed.  It has to do with taking something for granted; a supposition and is connected to arrogance; presumption and taking power from someone or something.

When you approach life or any situation with a bag full of Assumptions it is a kind of auto pilot way of dealing with life.  Those people and situations from which power resides to help you grow, that power is stolen by assumptions rendered weak, and ineffective.  Assumptions are just another way to “stay in control” it is also the deathblow to any kind of growth or creativity in your life.  Assumptions will hurt any relationship you wish to see flourish and expand, whether with people or God for that matter.  So you have a bunch of Assumptions About God, which will always, keeps from a relationship With GOD.  Your lover, friends and strangers you meet on the street will never be able to climb the walls of your Assumptions.  Not to mention the GOD given creativity your soul is dying to demonstrate in concert with the unknown, that assumptions hate so much.

CHALLENGE YOUR ASSUMPTIONS, and do it now remember they are nouns and require a persistent challenge.  Write down your Assumptions all of them, the ones you have about yourself and who your not first and foremost.  Then challenge all those comfortable and tidy Assumptions you have about people and start with the ones closest to you, those are the ones whose power you need to transform.  Let the other just BE who they are and love them for it, the power there for Creativity is beyond your understanding and Assumptions.  Challenge what you think you know about all the stuff all the time, because the TRUTH is you don’t know that much!  Challenge your Assumptions about God most of all and the nature of the Spiritual world, for GOD hates to be approached by an assumptive mind.

There is transformational power in challenging your assumptions, you just might start creatively living the life you have been blessed with and enjoying it more!  So what will I have if I abandon all my assumptions?    A life worth living.
