So you are on this Journey away from a fixed belief system, one in which faith in a grouping of doctrines and practices is required. That of course is easier said than done and you find yourself with an empty house and a little bit of anxiety for the choice you have made. You were convinced God was pleased with beliefs you could neither see nor confirm, and ideas that seemed to contradict each other concerning prayer, or how many angels fit on the head of a pin.
Let me say what actually attracted me to Jesus at first although at the time it’s not how he was promoted and I mean promoted, was the awareness he had concerning the things that really mattered, and the awareness he practiced as a spiritual man here on earth. Ask yourself this the things that he spoke of and lived daily were they matters of fixed faith, or were they what I like to call matter of action & awareness. Matters such as Love, Devotion, Kindness, Care & Concern for others, these are matters that require awareness and the action in love that follows.
This matter of following Jesus is not actually about belief in fixed systems of doctrines, creeds & ceremony, and this is what has been bugging you at a deep spiritual level for quite some time. You just couldn’t get your finger on the problem so to speak, but now as your spiritual awareness grows so does your spiritual discernment that something is wrong.
So the answer isn’t switching fixed systems of thought from say Calvinism to Universalism, although that’s a move in the right direction it’s a move that ultimately brings you back to a system again. The answer is lies in moving into and awareness that moves you into action that fully embraces life, as Jesus did as the Buddha did and many, many others as well.
We will talk more about this awareness in the future but for know like the movie “Unbreakable” with Bruce Willis you need to start practicing this love based action awareness, because it is the Bomb indeed it is The Christ!
This is as a person recovering from Bibliolarty one of the hardest things you will do, but it’s very important for your spiritual journey. Because what has really occurred is you have made the Bible into an Idol, you put in place of God who is a relational Spirit and not fixed letters on a page. So without getting into the question of how you were brainwashed into believing this, lets talk about recovery for a moment. You have to understand that people kill each other over religious Idols and the very Bible you took as an Idol is full of such stories, included the one about Jesus. You also have to understand that all recovery starts with taking personal responsibility.
So a few things to get out of the way
#1 the Bible is not a Book but rather a collection of writings spanning many thousands of years, stories and poetry of other peoples journeys with God and their understandings at the time.
#2 Every word in this collection of writings called the Bible is not words from God’s mind, indeed there are relatively few times is “God said” phrases in the Bible. Many of those times were in fact one time events according to writers and for a very local problems.
#3 You wanted it to be true (the bible is God’s conversation with me) because it’s far easier to go by the letter than the spirit, you were for lack of a better word spiritually lazy, or naturally fearful of the unknown which is a fair greater truth about God then all the books in the world about the subject.
#4 It was also nice to feel you had mastered something in your life, and mastering knowing God well it doesn’t get much more certain and puffed up than that. Haven’t you seen yourself in the language of others trapped in this cycle of fear of the unknown masquerading as certainty of the infinite?
Notice I put the responsibility were it lies because there is something in your personality, that both wants to be controlled and control others by the phrases “The Bible Says” or “The Word of God Says.” or in my day “It is Written.” The truth is it’s not hard to hear God for yourself once you make up your mind to this truth, stop worshiping God’s conversations with others as if they were idols from the past to turn into Christian demi-gods.
But in one place in one book it says it’s inspired and I get that but so is a sunset or a birds morning song you see let it be what it is a breeze through a tree, but the tree is not the breeze. You made it into an Idol, how many people would rather study “God’s word” then go for a walk together in the woods or meditate on goodness or love. Look we took the easy way out letting the “experts” tell us what it meant and believing it lock stock and barrel, that they and it were beyond question. we are responsible for this box we made, not them you see people with always chose control over the freedom of an unknown journey. So the first thing you must do and I mean really do is repent, yes I used the word repent. Repent that you took the road most traveled and that you suck at leaps of faith and journeys into unknown lands. It’s funny that men for the most rule this Kingdom of Bible worship and the idolization of the stories of others, but the time has come to make our own stories from our journeys. Yes let us be inspired by the journeys of others and learn from them if possible, but let us never again chose then for now or past glories for future ones, Carpe Diem my friends. to be continued.
At first you might think I’ll just “forget about it” but actually your mind doesn’t work the way. You see you have to confront the idea and expose it to the truth you always knew deep down inside your spirit, which you ignored and where afraid to vocalize. Remember though it was you who believed it and it was you who gave it power,so the challenge has to be directed towards your mind.
One way to do it is to watch at everyday people loving each other laughing and playing, then ask yourself did I really believe these people would go to Hell if they don’t believe my churches doctrines? Another thing to do is to look at pictures of the or all those people killed by Hitler & Pol Pot, and say yourself are all these Jews and Buddhist in Hell because of what I believed? Notice that we are not trying to find bible verses to counter the other ones you believed without question, remember you can’t get to a new place by using the same old methods. You see it was your slavish belief in other peoples interpretations of the Bible that got you believing nonsense in the first place.
The last thing you can do is look at pictures of your family and friends and say; “I no longer believe all these people I love and have loved are in Hell because of my old belief system, my God of Love is now bigger than that.”
One of the things that finally dawns on you when you are challenging the things you used to believe,
is that much of it wasn’t your belief in the first place.
You know all the things that bugged you like Good Old Uncle Harry in hell because he was a Mormon,
or you being born in the hole and worth just slightly more than a worm.
They never resonated with your spirit always bugging you,
as if those ideas vibrated at a frequency that gave your spirit a unbalanced feeling.
Then one day you become aware that they never were your beliefs in the first place,
that they belonged to others who in their desire to be faithful gladly gave them to you.
Sometimes we actually paid to learn what our spirit could never embrace,
but such is the need for acceptance that we kept piling them on.
Then comes the day when you realize beliefs are a personal,
and that belief is not one size fits all.
You begin to listen to that still small voice within you and then you begin to let go,
and you discover your balance not by what you add but by what you release.
At this point those things which are naturally attracted to you begin to be obvious,
and those beliefs which were never yours, begin to move away from you.
